1980 agosto 2025

30 July > 2 August 2025

1980 agosto 2025 originated from the chance purchase, at a market in Bazzano, by Sergio Smerieri of seven images taken in the days following the Bologna bombing of 2 August 1980. The photographs were found on a USB drive inside a second-hand scanner.

This was followed by an equally chance encounter with Jacopo Cenacchi at the Festival of Vernacular Photography in Guiglia, and by the presence, in the gallery, of the work Un caro amico, dedicated to ATC bus number 37. Driven by Agide Melloni, the bus transported the dead and injured between the station devastated by the bomb and Ospedale Maggiore. The work was awarded the Fondazione CarisBo Prize for Collectors at the recent OpenTour, marking the 45th anniversary of the attack.

Bringing together these elements, the curators were naturally led to produce a booklet, in a limited edition of 37 copies, and an exhibition of these orphaned images, taken in those days.

The aim of the project is to present to the public photographs that would otherwise have remained unseen, made accessible only through this series of chance encounters.
