Galleria Studio Cenacchi was founded in Bologna in 2016 out of Jacopo Cenacchi’s longstanding research into and passion for art, with a particular focus on contemporary art.
The gallery occupies more than 150 square metres across three floors of the sixteenth-century Palazzo Ghiselli Vasselli, at Via Santo Stefano 63 in Bologna. Each of its three distinct spaces has its own character, allowing the architecture to enter into a meaningful dialogue with the works on display.
From the outset, the gallery has pursued a rigorous exhibition programme centred on the quality of its artistic choices. It presents emerging artists alongside established figures, without distinctions of medium or generation, and promotes their work through exhibitions and participation in art fairs. The gallery works directly with all the artists it represents and promotes, or with their estates.
An early example of this approach was the gallery’s second exhibition, Tempera, held in spring 2017 and devoted to the renowned painter Giorgio Zucchini (Bologna, 1939), a member of the Nuovi-Nuovi group that emerged with the exhibition curated by Renato Barilli at Bologna’s GAM in 1980.
Also significant are the two exhibitions devoted to Sigfrido Bartolini (Pistoia, 1932–2007), one of the leading Italian printmakers of the twentieth century, as well as a painter and critic. The first, in 2019, focused on his graphic work; the second, in 2023, on his painting.
Far removed from easy shortcuts and the current financial frenzy surrounding the art market, the gallery remains committed to the curiosity of research and to the pleasure of introducing artists with distinctive and original practices.
Photography has become an important strand of the gallery’s programme, encompassing artists who are less familiar to the wider public alongside established names with an international profile, including Elena Franco and Marco Rigamonti.
In 2021 the gallery presented From London to Free Derry, an exhibition by Brescia-born photographer and designer Gian Butturini (1935–2006), whose work became the focus of an international debate following the republication of London by Gian Butturini.
The gallery’s engagement with photography has continued through its relationship with Piedmontese artist Simone Martinetto, whose solo exhibition Cinema interiore was presented during Arte Fiera 2023.
Among the most interesting emerging artists promoted by Galleria Studio Cenacchi in recent years is undoubtedly Imola-born sculptor Zeno Bertozzi (1994), whose refined sculptural practice centres on ceramic and plaster.
Another cornerstone of the gallery’s identity is its close connection with the local and regional art scene. It continually seeks out new voices among artists from Emilia-Romagna, whether established or still relatively unknown.
This approach can be seen in the relationship established in 2017 with the well-known Romagna artist Francesco Bocchini, for whom the gallery has organised the solo exhibitions Carnival and Testa carbonara. Other examples include Andrea Bersani (Bologna, 1955–2022) and, more recently, Modena-born artist Daniele Cabri, presented in the exhibitions Ad Lunam and Cave canem.
Since its foundation, the gallery has also collaborated with Studio Legale Iusgate in Bologna, where it has organised several exhibitions during Arte Fiera. In 2022, the law firm became a second permanent exhibition venue, just five minutes from the gallery, hosting three exhibitions each year.
The gallery has also developed a fruitful partnership with the Fondazione del Monte di Bologna e Ravenna, which supported Elena Franco’s Imago Pietatis project in 2020. Another important collaboration has been established with the Cineteca di Bologna, which hosted a solo exhibition by Simone Martinetto in early 2023, running concurrently with his exhibition at the gallery.
More recently, the gallery has begun working with art critic Raffaele Quattrone, curator of the multi-venue group exhibition Legami fragili, the gallery’s stand at ArtVerona 2024, and Zeno Bertozzi’s solo exhibition Trame silenziose, presented at Galleria Studio Cenacchi in Bologna and Galleria Artra in Milan. Further collaborations are currently being developed.
Among the gallery’s forthcoming exhibitions is Davide Bramante’s first solo show in Bologna, curated by Raffaele Quattrone and scheduled for November–December 2026, followed by a two-person exhibition featuring Domenico Grenci and Alessandro Saturno in January–February 2027. During 2027, the gallery will also present the first solo exhibitions at Galleria Studio Cenacchi by Roberto Ghezzi, Angelo Demitri Morandini and SoHyun Bae.
The gallery also offers, on request, a dedicated art advisory service for the acquisition of artworks, as well as on-site consultations to develop bespoke art placement projects for private homes and professional spaces.
