On Saturday 21 January 2023 at 4.30 pm, the solo exhibition Cinema interiore by Simone Martinetto opens at Studio Cenacchi Arte Contemporanea, Via Santo Stefano 63, Bologna. The exhibition is curated by Maria Chiara Wang, author of the critical text.
Two photographic series are presented: Unexpected Cinema and I Shut My Eyes in Order to See. Originating from different conceptual premises, the two bodies of work are brought together by Martinetto’s distinctive sensibility — a poetic depth that, through evocation and contemplation, transforms images into refined and unexpected visual moments.
As Maria Chiara Wang writes:
“In Unexpected Cinema, perspective is reversed: the selected shots portray those ‘ghost presences’ — people and objects — that animate the machinery of cinema while usually remaining unseen, making it possible. They are small epiphanies captured by the set photographer: a cinema within cinema, a parallel narrative, another possible and unexpected story.
In I Shut My Eyes in Order to See, vision becomes interior; it turns into contemplation and silence. The rhythm slows, images settle into mental landscapes. […] In the chaotic island of Manhattan, at the heart of the Big Apple, there are those who manage to pause the flow, remain in the present and let thoughts drift away through meditation: Doyeon, a young Korean Buddhist nun living in a small temple among skyscrapers; Cliff, an insurance broker; and Michael, an ultramarathon athlete. This series of triptychs is therefore an invitation — in the artist’s own words — to close one’s eyes in order to truly see.”
Alongside this exhibition, another solo show by Simone Martinetto, Sollevare lo specchio, opens on Tuesday 24 January at the Cinema Lumière (Cineteca di Bologna) and runs until 28 February. The photographs exhibited there are available for purchase through the gallery.
