Professor at the Faculty of Engineering in Reggio Emilia, Diego Macrì was born in Scilla (Reggio Calabria) in 1947. During his childhood, his father moved to Rome, where he soon became acquainted with painters and sculptors such as Renato Guttuso, Mario Schifano, Tano Festa, Giulio Turcato, Tancredi Parmeggiani and Giuseppe Mazzullo. His interest in images developed “naturally”, accompanying his father on afternoon visits to artists’ studios and galleries along Via del Babuino. This long formative period of “passive” exposure to artworks trained his eye through familiarity, repetition, and attentive observation, as well as through the critical conversations he absorbed.He began photographing at the age of twelve with a small Ducati 18×24 mm camera. He later graduated in engineering in Rome. Drawn to Pop Art, after his degree he dedicated five years to non-figurative oil painting. Since 1976 he has lived in Bologna, where he resumed photography consistently from 2006. Among his exhibitions, he took part in the 2010 edition of Fotografia Europea in Reggio Emilia. His images explore the subtle boundary between truth and artificiality—an increasingly blurred distinction in contemporary visual culture, shaped by the ambiguous and hybrid nature of our postmodern world. At Galleria Studio Cenacchi he presented the solo exhibition Fictionalism (2017).
