Ars curandi is the latest chapter of Hospitalia, Elena Franco’s distinctive photographic project exploring historic hospitals in Italy and across Europe, from the Middle Ages to the present day. Begun in 2012, the project now turns to three former hospitals that have become museums: the Hospices de Beaune in France, Notre-Dame à la Rose in Lessines, Belgium, and Santa Maria della Scala in Siena, Italy.
None of the buildings Franco photographs still serves its original purpose. Their role has changed. Yet, as we look at the works on display and leaf through the book that gives the exhibition its title, past and present seem to coexist. Each photograph captures something of both identities: the history of these places as hospitals and their life today as museums.
