Ars curandi is the most recent chapter of Hospitalia, a distinctive research project on historic hospitals in Italy and across Europe, from the Middle Ages to the present day, which Elena Franco began in 2012. This body of work explores the historical and architectural heritage of three former hospitals now transformed into museums: the Hospices de Beaune in France, the Notre-Dame à la Rose Hospital in Lessines (Belgium), and Santa Maria della Scala in Siena (Italy). None of the buildings depicted has retained its original function. They have become something else. Yet, through the images and the book that gives the project its title, each photograph condenses both the hospital past and the museum present of these spaces.
