Elena Franco has always reflected on places and on the ways we inhabit and perceive them. With Inner Space, she temporarily moves away from built environments and turns to the natural spaces of caves. Yet, even here, she does not simply document these artificially lit environments: her aim is to investigate the transformation of these natural cathedrals through their encounter with human presence. By intervening directly on the photographs, the artist redefines the image itself, creating an inverted world—one into which it is compelling to immerse oneself. Inner Space draws on literary and cinematic references, inviting a reflection on ourselves and the environment we inhabit, from infinity to the centre of the Earth.
The project Inner Space was developed at Chippendale Studio, Milan.
