On Saturday 12 April at 5 pm, the solo exhibition In the Garden of Eden by Luca Madera opens at Galleria Studio Cenacchi, Via Santo Stefano 63, Bologna.

Madera’s second solo exhibition with the gallery draws on the artist’s reading and study of John Milton’s 17th-century poem Paradise Lost.

Reflecting on Milton’s narrative—telling the biblical story of the Fall of Man, the temptation of Adam and Eve by Satan, and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden—the artist has undertaken a long-term photographic research across the Bolognese territory. Year after year, he has documented natural landscapes, developing a personal interpretation of Milton’s text.

As Luca Madera writes:

“In the Garden of Eden we may all find ourselves, in the feeling that the other is the end, that each of us is the purpose of the other. Even if we are on different continents, we meet face to face in the Garden of Eden, which is neither a fable nor a legend, but the deepest and most original nature of the world we inhabit—yet one we are unable to live in, because we do not know how to see it. We do not know where or how to look, nor whom to look at. Because the Garden of Eden is a ‘who’, not a ‘where’; just as the other—our sister, our brother—is the true place in which our life unfolds.”

The exhibition features 12 medium- and large-format photographs, alongside a projection of additional images from Madera’s work. The three-level layout of the gallery accompanies visitors through the path conceived by the artist.

The exhibition is curated by Jacopo Cenacchi. Dates: 12 April – 8 May 2025 (open on 14 April and 5 May; closed on 19 April).
