The exhibition places at its centre the figure of a truly unique artist, tracing a rich and multifaceted career spanning over fifty years. Kido Emiliani’s practice ranges from the creation of garments for leading Italian fashion designers to work in theatre — including direction, set design and costumes — from abstract batik works to refined figurative pieces such as his “Madonne”, from ceramics to the “Bambolone”, realised both on batik and padded fabric.
Kido adopts batik — the ancient Indonesian technique of fabric painting — as his primary medium, embracing its openness to experimentation. He personalises the process by playing with the cracks formed by dried wax, generating distinctive visual effects, and layering additional techniques onto already painted silk.
By combining traditional batik with his own painterly language, he achieves subtle tonal variations that lend depth and preciousness to the works — qualities rarely found, even within the Eastern tradition itself.
As Carlo Lucarelli writes:
