ARTIST

Massimo Golfieri

Born in Faenza in 1953, Massimo Golfieri studied under painters Vincenzo Satta and Pompilio Mandelli, and graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna with a thesis on pictorialist photography. Since the 1980s he has exhibited his photographs in numerous Italian cities and within independent Northern European circuits such as Trans Europe Halles. His work consists of long-term reportage projects, primarily in analogue black and white, often hand-coloured on fine art prints, documenting journeys and encounters across the Mediterranean, France, the Middle East, the United States and India. He has also documented social and artistic contexts, including the long-term project Esterni in interno, focused on control structures within psychiatric hospitals in Imola, carried out over more than ten years in still-active wards — notably without ever photographing the patients. Other significant works include Cose Turche, a 1983 reportage along the borders of Turkey, Armenia, Kurdistan, Iran and Iraq; Brandenburger Tor, documenting the reopening of the Berlin Wall through hand-coloured analogue prints; Sacrario ai caduti di tutte le feste; Ritratti di pecore in posa, and Transiti, a reflection on the forms and surfaces generated during the decomposition of fruit and vegetables. At times, Golfieri combines his images with writing, collaborating with authors and poets for editorial publications. In recent years, he has also explored digital image processing, moving towards illustration and graphic applications. Since 1991 he has been curator of the visual identity for Angelica – International Festival of Music and for the Centro di Ricerca Musicale Teatro San Leonardo in Bologna. He lives and works in Imola.
