With impeccable coherence and measured restraint, Mario Lamma unfolds a refined visual language in sermo humilis: the subjects of his photographs — stones, plants, twigs — become active pretexts for a reflection that is not abstractly symbolic, but philosophically alive. Because it is simply so: nothing is created, nothing is destroyed, everything is transformed.

The earth appears both as a distant globe, observed from above, and as the ground we walk upon — something that accompanies us and awaits us. We may play with time, but in the end, time plays with us.

A few essential nouns — stripped of adjectives — define Lamma’s practice: coherence, measure, humility. Photography is not only a visual object, but also the act that produces it. As Henri Cartier-Bresson stated: “To give meaning to the world, one must feel involved in what is framed in the viewfinder. It requires concentration, mental discipline, sensitivity and a sense of geometry. Only through a minimal use of means can one achieve simplicity of expression.”

Lamma has long refined this mental and operational attitude, with the persistence of an artist who does not reproduce reality to display it, but rather returns it as it is felt and perceived — with the desire to share it, and with the awareness that what is, passes, but what has been, remains.
