Imago Pietatis investigates the Imagines Pietatis preserved in the Historical Archive of the Monte di Pietà of Bologna, held by the Fondazione del Monte di Bologna e Ravenna. The project reinterprets an archive of over one hundred volumes, each featuring an image of Christ in pity painted along the upper edge. Franco creates new images, addressing themes of solidarity, care and the human condition through a variety of media. Photography remains the common thread, though the outcomes move beyond traditional photographic practice: posters, scanner-based images—often manually reworked—and digital prints on fabric. The project culminates in an artist’s book of over 800 pages, produced in only three copies.
