Figure. I cinquant’anni del “Teatro da Camera”
02.10 – 31.10.2024
On Wednesday 2 October at 5 pm, the exhibition Figure. I cinquant’anni del Teatro da Camera by Laura Falqui and Raffaele Milani opens at Galleria Studio Cenacchi, Via Santo Stefano 63, Bologna. The exhibition is realised with the valuable collaboration of the Cineteca di Bologna and L’Immagine Ritrovata, under the patronage of the Municipality of Bologna, the Emilia-Romagna Region, and Italia Nostra – Bologna.
Laura Falqui and Raffaele Milani are the founders and leading figures of Teatro da Camera, active since 1971, initially under the name Teatro della Pantomima. That same year, they opened their first venue—likely the first cineclub in Bologna—in Vicolo Monticelli 6/b, presenting a hybrid programme of avant-garde theatre and cinema.
The space hosted screenings of works from the historical avant-gardes, ranging from German Expressionism to French Impressionism, from Dada and Surrealist cinema to underground film, alongside early horror film programmes and screenings dedicated to Japanese cinema. Through its focus on American independent cinema and Italian artists’ film (including Bandoli, Grifi and Ontani), Teatro della Pantomima became a vital creative and intellectual laboratory for young scholars of cinema and theatre, as well as a debut venue for emerging theatre groups and a host space for experimental practices.
Renamed Teatro da Camera in the mid-1970s, Falqui and Milani continued to develop an original intermedia practice centred on gesture, spanning installation, performance, film and video, with numerous works presented in major cultural venues. Since the 2000s, they have also been active in teaching direction and movement.
The October programme will also mark the formal donation of their entire archive of videos and stage photographs to the Cineteca di Bologna.
On Thursday 10 October at 6 pm, at the Biblioteca Renzo Renzi, the catalogue—edited by the artists and Giorgio Morara—will be presented, together with a selection of videos curated by Stefano Lorusso. The catalogue documents the full scope of their creative activity, teaching, and publications.
The exhibition design at the gallery is curated by Umberto Saraceni, Visual Lab.
