On Wednesday 2 October at 5 pm, Galleria Studio Cenacchi, Via Santo Stefano 63, opens Figure. Fifty Years of Teatro da Camera by Laura Falqui and Raffaele Milani. The exhibition has been developed with the valuable collaboration of the Cineteca di Bologna and L’Immagine Ritrovata, and is supported by the Municipality of Bologna, the Emilia-Romagna Region and Italia Nostra Bologna.
Laura Falqui and Raffaele Milani founded Teatro da Camera and have been its leading figures throughout its history. Their collaboration began in 1971 with the Teatro della Pantomima. Combining experimental cinema and avant-garde theatre, they opened their first venue at Vicolo Monticelli 6/b, which was probably also Bologna’s first film club.
Its programme embraced the historic avant-gardes, from German Expressionism and French Impressionism to Dada and Surrealist cinema and the underground. Early horror films and Japanese cinema also featured in dedicated programmes. Screenings extended to American independent cinema and experimental work by Italian artists, including Bandoli, Grifi and Ontani.
During those years, Teatro della Pantomima became a lively centre for experimentation and research, particularly for a younger generation interested in cinema and theatre. It was both the company’s first performance space and a venue for other experimental groups.
In the mid-1970s, Falqui and Milani adopted the name Teatro da Camera and continued to develop their distinctive exploration of gesture across different art forms. Moving between installation, performance, cinema and video, they created around a dozen works presented at major theatrical and cultural venues. Since the 2000s, their work has also included teaching in directing and movement.
The events taking place in October will also mark the donation of Teatro da Camera’s complete archive of videos and production photographs to the Cineteca di Bologna.
On Thursday 10 October at 6 pm, the Biblioteca Renzo Renzi will host the presentation of the catalogue, edited by the artists together with Giorgio Morara, accompanied by a selection of videos curated by Stefano Lorusso. The publication documents the full scope of Teatro da Camera’s creative work, teaching and publications.
The exhibition at Galleria Studio Cenacchi is designed by Umberto Saraceni, Visual Lab.
