On Saturday 8 March 2025 at 5 pm, Galleria Studio Cenacchi, Via Santo Stefano 63, Bologna, opens INNER SPACE, Elena Franco’s fourth solo exhibition at the gallery.

Throughout her work, Franco has explored our relationship with places and the ways we experience and perceive them. With Inner Space, she turns away, for once, from the built environment and enters the natural world of caves. Yet her interest goes beyond simply photographing these artificially lit spaces. She explores how these natural cathedrals are transformed by human presence.

Working directly on the photographs by hand, Franco reshapes what we see. The caves become an inverted world in which to immerse ourselves and lose our bearings, inviting connections between the spaces she photographs and transforms and our own inner landscape.

Rich in literary and cinematic references, Inner Space invites us to reflect on ourselves and on the environment we inhabit. From infinity to the centre of the Earth.

The Inner Space project began at Chippendale Studio in Milan, where Elena Franco produced an artist’s book in 2018. That research now develops into this exhibition, which brings together 15 works.
