On Thursday 4 April at 6 pm, Fragile Bonds opens at Galleria Studio Cenacchi, Via Santo Stefano 63, Bologna. Curated by Raffaele Quattrone, the exhibition brings together Rosalia Banet, Enrica Borghi, Zeno Bertozzi, Davide Bramante, Roberta Cavallari, Pierpaolo Curti, Alberto Di Fabio, Armida Gandini, Kepa Garraza, Alberto Gianfreda, Alessandro Moreschini, Sabrina Muzi and Antonio Riello.

Every society is built on relationships. We come together because we are stronger together, giving up a degree of individual freedom in return for the support of others. For a long time, these bonds were thought of as solid: the foundations on which society itself depended.

Zygmunt Bauman challenged this idea through his concept of a ‘liquid’ society. The stable bonds of the past, he argued, have given way to increasingly fragile and temporary relationships — ‘rafts made of blotting paper’, an image that captures their precarious nature. Who, after all, would choose such a raft when shipwrecked and exposed to the elements?

In this uncertain landscape, lasting relationships can begin to seem impossible. Bonds are fragile from the outset, encouraging an increasingly powerful individualism in which protecting the self takes precedence over building something shared.

Fragile Bonds grew out of these ideas, but the project itself offers a different possibility. Rather than originating solely from the interests of a curator or gallery, it is shaped by the relationships between the curator, the artists and the spaces that host it. At each venue, the exhibition takes on a new form, responding to its surroundings while retaining its central concern: the power of human relationships to create communities and spaces for exchange.

The project has also established a partnership with CONNEXXION, Festival Diffuso di Arte Contemporanea, curated by Livia Savorelli, former director of Espoarte.

Through this partnership, two artists from the festival’s second edition have joined the project: Armida Gandini, who took part in Dialoghi intorno alla libertà, curated by Livia Savorelli at the Museo Sandro Pertini e Renata Cuneo in Savona, and Alberto Gianfreda, whose work featured in Frammenti. Atti di conservazione per un futuro di libertà, curated by Livia Savorelli and Matteo Galbiati at the Civico Museo Archeologico di Savona.

Fragile Bonds begins its journey at Galleria Studio Cenacchi in Bologna. It will then take on new forms at Studio DFB in Rome on 20 April and Spazio 21 in Lodi on 12 May, before travelling to Studio Roberta Cavallari – Palazzo Gresti Filippi in Ala and Casa Bramante – San Sebastiano Contemporary in Palazzolo Acreide, Syracuse, with dates for these later stages to be announced.
