In the Perso nel bosco series, Rigamonti’s dark images draw us into a tangle of branches that seem almost to brush against our faces and reach towards us. Here, the distant horizon gives way to an unsettling closeness. There is no detached, rational viewpoint from which to take in the scene: we are quite literally lost in the woods.

Seeing becomes a physical experience, unstable and all-encompassing. The images seem to follow the movement of a body making its way through undergrowth and meadows battered by the cold, beyond the control of conscious thought.

Shadowy, shifting and disorientating, these photographs resist any linear progression. Our sense of time begins to falter, along with our awareness of where we are. Photography becomes not a way of observing nature from the outside, but a sensitive record of what it feels like to be immersed within it.
