On Friday 16 May at 6 pm, the exhibition Paesaggi accidentali opens at Galleria Studio Cenacchi, Via Santo Stefano 63, Bologna. Curated by Pasquale Fameli, the exhibition presents a different artist and medium on each level of the gallery, bringing together Zeno Bertozzi, Augusto Gadea and Luca Mantovani in a shared reflection on landscape.

As Pasquale Fameli writes in the accompanying critical text:

Conventionally, the making of a landscape is based on the two-dimensional representation of an environment, whether real or imagined. However, the transformations that the representation of space has undergone over time—beginning with the dismantling of linear perspective—have introduced new ways of conceiving landscape within the visual arts. From the model of the panorama, an expansive and detailed view of a territory, the shift has been towards an anti-model: an uncertain and fragmented vision that invites reflection on the very dynamics of seeing. The works of Zeno Bertozzi, Augusto Gadea and Luca Mantovani exemplify the unstable, fragmented and multiple character that landscape assumes in the contemporary age.

– Zeno Bertozzi’s recent works, within a personal and profound investigation into the relentless passage of time, focus on his vision of a silent, inert and immobile landscape. This is achieved through a meticulous and continuous process of shaping plaster using a range of tools. The resulting works evoke possible landscapes—subtle textures and rarefied atmospheres.

– Over the past decade, Augusto Gadea’s research has centred on the development of a poetics of the earth through painting. Landscape is interpreted as a core of imaginative possibilities arising from contact with the materials that sustain us. He is interested in the evocative capacity of earth as a bearer of temporal and symbolic depth. Imagination and praxis converge in the very materials collected by the artist. Within this body of work, earth is transfigured from a horizontal to a vertical plane, shaping an image of the world that becomes a vision of landscape.

– New Epic by Luca Mantovani is a visual narrative rooted in a reflection on the theme of travel. It draws inspiration from Italian Eclogues, one of the most significant literary works on the Italian landscape by the Anglo-Caribbean poet Derek Walcott. The work traces his journeys beyond Mantua towards Venice, in a romantic itinerary that intertwines the Italian landscape with memories of the Russian poet Joseph Brodsky and key figures of classical literature.
