Sigfrido Bartolini (Pistoia, 21 January 1932 – 24 April 2007) was a painter, printmaker and writer. As a painter, his work ranged from monotype to fresco, watercolour and oil painting, up to stained glass—referred to in medieval tradition as “painting with light”. As a printmaker, he is especially renowned for his extraordinary activity as a wood engraver, most notably the monumental edition of Pinocchio, illustrated with 309 woodcuts, as well as for his work in etching and lithography. As a writer, he authored volumes such as Chiesa di Cristo & altri generi (1967), Lettere di San Bernardino da Siena a un quotidiano (1969) and La Grande Impostura (2002). He also published monographs on major 20th-century artists including Boldini, Soffici, Sironi, Rosai, Lega and Cremona, and contributed extensively to newspapers such as L’Indipendente, Il Giornale and Libero. In 1966 he founded, together with Barna Occhini, the fortnightly journal Totalità, heir to La Voce and Lacerba, contributing both texts and original woodcuts. A tireless experimenter, he illustrated dozens of volumes, including works by Bernardo of Clairvaux, Vieira, Petrocchi, Serpieri, Savinio, Cattabiani, Nemi and Beatrice di Pian degli Ontani, as well as the Gospel for the Jubilee of 2000. He oversaw the printing of the monumental Pinocchio edition commissioned by the Fondazione Nazionale Carlo Collodi for the centenary of its publication (1983), illustrating it with over three hundred woodcuts in black and colour, the result of twelve years of work. The preparatory studies, drawings, engraved blocks and proofs later formed a major exhibition that toured internationally. In 2000, the Regione Lombardia dedicated a major retrospective exhibition to him at the Triennale in Milan, titled Sigfrido Bartolini testimone del suo tempo. His graphic works are held in important collections, including the Uffizi Prints and Drawings Department, the Vatican Library, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and the Albertina Museum in Vienna. His final work consists of the fourteen large stained-glass windows (the Seven Works of Mercy and the Seven Sacraments) for the Church of the Immacolata in Pistoia, inaugurated in December 2006. Today, his house-studio in Via di Bigiano e Castel dei Bovani in Pistoia is part of the Case della Memoria association.
