Apparitions, an exhibition by Pietro Caponetti curated by Jacopo Cenacchi, is presented at Studio Legale Iusgate, Via Castiglione 81, Bologna. It continues a collaboration between the gallery and the law firm that began in 2018. Since then, Iusgate has regularly hosted art exhibitions throughout the year, not only during Art City.
The exhibition brings together nine paintings, ranging from large to small-scale works. Caponetti’s images seem to surface from a distant past, both physically and metaphorically.
His distinctive technique is slow and painstaking. Layers of earth are applied, scraped away and painted over, with the process repeated several times. His predominantly muted palette recalls the sinopie found beneath ancient frescoes: preparatory drawings concealed for centuries and brought back to light through modern excavation.
In Saltatore, for example, a solitary figure might be an athlete performing the high jump at an ancient Olympic Games. Equally, it could suggest a collapsed body, someone lying on the ground, or something else entirely. Caponetti offers no clear answer. Instead, he leaves viewers free to follow their own associations and arrive at a personal reading of the image.
Elsewhere, his paintings evoke prehistoric cave art. Animals, trees and dense vegetation inhabit mysterious landscapes that resemble jungles of the artist’s own imagining.
Ultimately, the subjects themselves are less important than Caponetti’s desire to reconnect with the visual world of ancient frescoes and their underlying drawings. Through a meticulous and highly individual painting process, he recaptures something of their enduring fascination, creating works suspended between nostalgia and estrangement.
