Gian Butturini
Brescia, 1935 – 2006. An international photojournalist and multifaceted figure in visual communication, Gian Butturini first established himself in Brescia as a designer and interior architect. In 1969 he published London by Gian Butturini, reissued in 2017 by Damiani with a foreword by Martin Parr. Over the course of his career, he produced around forty photobooks, including Cuba 26 Luglio, Dall’Irlanda dopo Londonderry, Tu Interni Io Libero (with Franco Basaglia), C’era una volta il Muro, and DONNE lo sguardo, le storie, introduced by Carla Cerati, as well as two volumes on Chilean history. In his autobiographical book Daiquiri (Edizioni Mimesis), he recounts his experiences as a photojournalist. His photographs have been exhibited internationally, including in Strange and Familiar at the Barbican Centre, at the Manchester Art Gallery, and at Somerset House for Photo London 2018. As a filmmaker, he directed documentaries such as Crimini di Pace, with music by Luigi Nono, and Bologna, 10.15 strage, as well as the feature film Il mondo degli ultimi, starring Lino Capolicchio, which received awards at international festivals.The artist’s cultural legacy is currently promoted by the Associazione Gian Butturini.
