EXHIBITION

Marco Rigamonti

Periplo siciliano

Galleria: 13 January > 17 February 2024
Studio Legale: 13 January > 8 March 2024

On Saturday 13 January 2024 at 5 pm, a dual opening takes place in Bologna:
– at Galleria Studio Cenacchi, Via Santo Stefano 63
– at the Studio Iusgate venue, Via Castiglione 81

The solo exhibition PERIPLO SICILIANO by Marco Rigamonti opens across both venues. The artist’s second exhibition with the gallery, curated by Jacopo Cenacchi, presents for the first time in Bologna his photographic research on Sicily, following its successful presentation in Milan at the latest edition of MIA Fair (March 2023).

The exhibition features 30 works, including 10 never previously printed.

Rigamonti’s photographs reflect the vision of an artist from the Po Valley—born in Piacenza—who has developed a deep connection with Sicily, where he has spent many of his summer periods. His gaze deliberately avoids familiar subjects, seeking instead alternative signs that diverge from conventional imagery. Through his images, Rigamonti conveys both his attachment to the land and a sense of disillusionment towards what Gaetano Savatteri has described as the “ruins of the contemporary”.

As Gaetano Savatteri writes in the text introducing the volume Periplo siciliano (Postcart Edizioni):

“Sicily seeks to assert itself not only through its own weight, but also through the narratives it constructs about itself. It does so in literature, cinema and theatre—and also through the eye of the photographer. Marco Rigamonti has chosen to move away from predetermined paths. He has selected a Sicily in which the mark of the contemporary largely prevails. […] He has travelled across the island in search of monuments that are not silent ghosts, but recently built by us. Ruins of the present. Vestiges of the contemporary. An extreme landscape in which contrast is entirely internal, broken only by the blinding light that interrupts and dissolves the shadows.”

The works on view, presented across the two venues, immediately convey the dazzling intensity of Sicilian summer light. Through closer observation, they also reveal a sense of pietas towards the territory and its contradictions, offering a clear insight into the artist’s sensibility and poetic vision.
