The exhibition dedicated to the graphic work of Sigfrido Bartolini, one of the most important Italian artists of the twentieth century, presents a carefully selected group of etchings, lithographs and woodcuts created over fifty years of activity. From the beloved Tuscan landscapes to views of San Vigilio di Marebbe, from the celebrated woodcuts for Pinocchio to the series of lithographs and etchings devoted to the zodiac signs, the exhibition traces the breadth of Bartolini’s artistic language.

As Pier Francesco Listri wrote (La Nazione, 2008):

“After Fattori, Viani and the Pisan Viviani, I do not know another twentieth-century engraver in this land who can stand at his level. The dry, essential quality of his line — yet capable of intimate poetic vibration — redraws the Tuscan landscape with solemn, classical austerity. Bartolini ‘wrote’ reality with a lyrical and desolate essentiality, heir to a Viani-like desolation but also to a rare expressive power. Certain landscapes — walls, farmhouses, bare trees, chains of hills — carry the weight of the great graphic tradition of Fattori.”

Edoardo Salvi adds:

“Artists like Sigfrido, capable of moving from painting to engraving and lithography, can be compared to polyglots able to express emotions and ideas each time in a different language, unified by a shared root between form and image. […] From drawing to monotype, watercolour and oil painting; or from drawing to drypoint, etching, woodcut and lithography — without forgetting the diaristic notes in clear prose that accompany his work.”
