On Saturday 16 February at 6 pm, Studio Cenacchi, Via Santo Stefano 63, Bologna, opens The Graphic Work of Sigfrido Bartolini.
Dedicated to the graphic work of Sigfrido Bartolini, one of the leading Italian artists of the twentieth century, the exhibition brings together a carefully selected group of etchings, lithographs and woodcuts spanning fifty years of his career. The works range from his much-loved Tuscan landscapes and views of San Vigilio di Marebbe to the celebrated Pinocchio woodcuts and series of lithographs and etchings devoted to the signs of the zodiac.
Pier Francesco Listri writes:
“After Fattori, Viani and the Pisan artist Viviani, I know of no other twentieth-century printmaker from this region who can be considered his equal. His spare, incisive line, while capable of conveying an intimate poetic intensity, gave the Tuscan landscape a new form, bathed in a light of solemn, classical austerity. Sigfrido Bartolini ‘wrote’ reality with a lyrical, solitary economy of means. He inherited something of Viani’s sense of desolation, but also possessed an expressive power of exceptional force. Some of his landscapes — walls and farmhouses, bare, slender trees and sweeping hills — have the weight and authority of Fattori’s finest graphic work.”
